"Halo is the most comforting fragrance in the range and the one people tend to finish first. There is a brief citrus and lavandin opening — clean, slightly herbal, over almost as soon as it starts — and then it settles into what it actually is: a warm, resinous amber-vanilla that sits close to the skin and radiates gently for hours.

The heart is benzoin and labdanum, which is the combination that gives this style its characteristic sweet-balsamic depth. It smells like warm resin rather than sugar. Underneath, tonka bean and Madagascar vanilla add a soft powdery sweetness, and ambergris gives it a slightly salty, skin-like quality that stops it becoming a dessert.

This is a fragrance for cold weather and close proximity. It does not shout across a room and it is not meant to — the pleasure is in the way it sits on a jumper and stays there. Formerly sold under the name Helou, it is one of the house's steadiest sellers."

Bujairami

Bujairami is an Australian fragrance house, founded in 2020 and composed throughout by its namesake perfumer, Adam Bujairami. The premise is unfashionably simple: build fragrances that hold their own beside the great niche houses, then price them so that wearing one daily is not an act of extravagance. Almost the entire catalogue is bottled at Extrait de Parfum or high-concentration Eau de Parfum strength, which is where the performance comes from — more perfume oil in the bottle, slower evaporation on skin, and a trail that is still present at the end of the evening. It is a house built for people who buy fragrance to wear it, not to admire it on a shelf.

Grand Soir defined the modern amber-vanilla — a fragrance built almost entirely from benzoin, labdanum and tonka, with just enough citrus at the top to stop it feeling heavy. It is warm, simple and enormously popular, and it has been widely interpreted since.

Halo is Bujairami's version, previously sold under the name Helou. It follows the same architecture closely and adds a touch more vanilla in the base, which makes it slightly sweeter and rounder. At eight to ten hours of wear it performs comparably to fragrances several times the price, and it is the bottle most often recommended to people who say they want something warm rather than something clever.
