"Gold is the most immediately likeable fragrance in this group and the easiest to wear badly-timed. The opening is a genuinely luxurious citrus — Brazilian orange, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian lemon, lifted with ginger — juicy and sparkling rather than sharp, and it smells considerably more expensive than it is.

The heart is the interesting part: melon, pear and green apple give it a soft, almost nectar-like fruitiness, while cinnamon, Guatemalan cardamom and cloves run underneath and add a dry spice that keeps the fruit from turning into juice. It is a difficult balance and it is well judged here.

The base is deliberately restrained — white musk, amber, Madagascar vanilla and soft woods — which is why this works in heat when richer fragrances become oppressive. Projection is moderate by design. Think of it as a very well-dressed daytime fragrance rather than a statement, and it will serve you from April through September."

Bujairami

Bujairami is an Australian fragrance house, founded in 2020 and composed throughout by its namesake perfumer, Adam Bujairami. The premise is unfashionably simple: build fragrances that hold their own beside the great niche houses, then price them so that wearing one daily is not an act of extravagance. Almost the entire catalogue is bottled at Extrait de Parfum or high-concentration Eau de Parfum strength, which is where the performance comes from — more perfume oil in the bottle, slower evaporation on skin, and a trail that is still present at the end of the evening. It is a house built for people who buy fragrance to wear it, not to admire it on a shelf.

Erba Gold sits in Xerjoff's Casamorati-adjacent territory of luminous, fruit-forward citrus — an expensive-smelling style built on orange, pear and soft spice, finished with vanilla and musk. It is one of the more difficult effects to reproduce, because thin citrus reads as cheap almost immediately.

Gold gets closer than most. The opening in particular has the right quality of brightness, and the cardamom-and-clove spine gives it structure the cheaper interpretations lack. It is the fragrance in this selection most suited to British summer, and the one to choose if you have found the oud and amber releases too heavy for daily wear.
