"If you buy one bottle from this house, buy this one. Emperor is Bujairami's best-selling fragrance and it is not a difficult thing to understand — it works in the single most universally liked accord in men's perfumery, and it works in it well.

The opening is the famous one: grapefruit and apple with bergamot and blackcurrant, tart and bright and instantly recognisable. The heart is busier than most compositions in this style, with ginger and cardamom adding a dry spice edge and jasmine and lily of the valley softening it. What matters is the base — ambergris, pink pepper, cashmere patchouli and vetiver — which gives it the smoky-woody dryness that makes this family of fragrance smell expensive rather than fruity.

Performance is genuinely strong: eight to ten hours on skin with real projection for the first three. It is office-safe, wedding-safe and date-safe, which is a rare combination. If you are buying a first bottle for someone else and you do not know their taste, this is the statistically correct answer."

Fresh, fruity and smoky — a bright grapefruit-and-apple opening that dries down into dry woods and ambergris. This is the pineapple-and-birch school of fragrance that Creed's Aventus made famous, and Emperor is Bujairami's interpretation of that Absolu style: a little sweeter up top, noticeably smokier in the base, and built to last. Masculine-leaning but comfortably unisex.
